Phosphorus Homeopathic Remedy: Personality, Fears & Keynotes

Table of Contents

Introduction

Hi, welcome back to the Homeopathy Materia Medica series. I’m Dr. Imran Ali, and today I’ll be talking about the homeopathic remedy Phosphorus, which is the same phosphorus found on the periodic table designated with atomic number 15. Next to calcium, phosphorus is the second most abundant mineral in the human body. Eighty-five percent of the body’s phosphorus is found in the bones.

Phosphorus is a commonly indicated constitutional remedy, and it’s also frequently prescribed for a wide variety of acute ailments. Alright, we’ve got a lot of territory to cover, so let’s get started.

Phosphorus Homeopathic Remedy key Symptoms by Dr Imran ali

Personality Traits of Phosphorus

Phosphorus is a Social Butterfly

Okay, so the first, most obvious thing about phosphorus types is their outgoing, friendly demeanor. Phosphorus is highly social. She’s a social butterfly. She loves people, and people usually love her. Phosphorus has a bright smile and a bubbly personality. She’s extroverted and expressive. She’s attractive to others because of her open and inviting way. She wears her emotions on her sleeve. What you see is what you get; there are no pretensions.

Optimistic & Positive Attitude

Phosphorus always has a positive attitude, and even when the going gets tough, she tends to remain remarkably optimistic. Her optimism can be infectious.

Easy To Talk

Phosphorus types are very easy to talk to, which usually makes for a pleasant and stress-free interview.

Phosphorus Children Are Precocious

Phosphorus children can be precocious, finding it easy to converse with adults. As we shall see, the personality of phosphorus burns bright just like the element on the periodic table.

Phosphorus Desires & Needs Company

Now, phosphorus loves people, but she also needs people. She thrives on the energy of others to keep herself going. Phosphorus is the opposite of Natrum Mur, who needs to be alone to recharge his batteries. Phosphorus becomes energized in the presence of other people. She desires company, and she needs company.

Phosphorus lists prominently under:

  • Desire for company
  • Aggravated while alone.

Phosphorus is Sympathetic

Phosphorus is also famously sympathetic. She is sensitive, kind, and cares a great deal for others. In fact, she is more than just sympathetic; she is empathic.

This trait can be so strong that phosphorus may begin to experience symptoms similar to those of the person she is concerned about. She may develop a sympathetic illness of her own.

Phosphorus lists in repertories under:

  • Sympathetic to the suffering of others.
  • Felt the same pain that his brother complained of.

Phosphorus Needs Sympathy & Consolation

Now it’s also true that Phosphorus herself desires and needs sympathy too. In repertories, we find this listed under:

  • Consolation ameliorates.

The nice thing is that phosphorus tends to be easily consolable. She responds quite favorably to a sympathetic ear. And a reassuring word goes a long way toward making her feel better.

Phosphorus is Very Open and Sharing

Another defining feature of phosphorus is that she’s very open. She willingly shares what she thinks and how she feels. She’s an open book. She’s also open and receptive to other people and to their feelings, thoughts, and vibrations.

Phosphorus Easily Trusts Others

She’s very trusting; in fact, she can be too trusting to the point of being naive and gullible.
She tends to accept whatever is said at face value. And she may believe what she’s told without ever questioning it. In this sense, she can be easily suggestible.

In repertories, Phos lists strongly under:

  • Impressionable

Some phosphorus types are so open that they can be psychic, picking up on all kinds of telepathic information and prone to premonitions (a strong feeling that something is about to happen, especially something unpleasant).

Phosphorus lists prominently in the repertory under:

Phosphorus is Too Open for Her Own Good

And herein lies the phosphorus Achilles heel (a small, fatal flaw or vulnerability). She is too open for her own good. All that receptivity to other people’s energies can take its toll on her own health and well-being. It’s a wonderful trait to have, and other people love her openness, but it’s not necessarily good for her.

Phosphorus lacks the innate natural boundaries that most people have to outside influences. She is oversensitive and susceptible to external impressions, and this leaves her at the mercy of these influences.

Lack of Boundaries

Now, by lack of boundaries, I don’t mean that phosphorus steps over other people’s boundaries. She lacks her own boundaries that should protect her from the outside world. She’s often more focused on others than on herself. It’s as if there is no clear dividing line between her and others.

Vulnerable to the Outside Influence of Others

Since she’s not centered within herself and is so vulnerable to the outside influence of others, she tends to be easily led or misled.

As a consequence:

  • She is inconsistent and unbalanced;
  • She’s not very grounded.
  • Instead, she may come across as flighty or excitable.
  • She lacks discipline and the ability to focus or concentrate.
  • She can be spacey, confused, and easily distractible.
  • At her worst, she can be described as scatter-brained, ditzy, or flaky.

Anxiety of Phosphorus

Furthermore, this lack of a barrier to outside forces makes phosphorus susceptible to anxiety. Oftentimes, the anxiety is:

  • About the well-being of her loved ones,
  • Sometimes it’s about her own health.
  • In some cases, it may be just a vague, undefined free-floating kind of anxiety.
  • She may be unable to pinpoint its source or the reason for it.

Phosphorescence: Homeopathic Phosphorus Remedy Vs Crude Phosphorus

Now let’s reflect for a moment upon this description of homeopathic phosphorus and consider its relationship to the element phosphorus.

Properties of Crude Phosphorus Element (Phosphorescence)

  • Phosphorus is a highly reactive substance.
  • It spontaneously ignites when exposed to air at or above eighty-six degrees Fahrenheit.
  • It burns fast and bright.
  • When exposed to light, a phosphorescent substance absorbs the energy of that light and then re-emits it by generating its own light.
  • It glows. Phosphorescent things glow in the dark.

Properties of Homeopathic Phosphorus Person

If we apply this metaphor of phosphorescence to the remedy phosphorus, we see:

  • A person who shines brightly.
  • She glows and radiates positive energy that others recognize in her friendly, open, and sympathetic demeanor.
  • When her energy is depleted, she recharges her batteries by surrounding herself with the company of others.
  • Her openness renders her susceptible to absorbing the energies of those around her.
  • On the downside, she can pick up on and easily absorb negative and unhealthy energies that aren’t always in her best interest.
  • Her phosphorescent nature allows her to both absorb and to emit the various energies that she encounters in her environment.

Phosphorus at Later Stages of Illness

Now, not all phosphorus cases are going to exhibit these classic features. As the vital force becomes compromised, the symptom picture can change. In the later stage of illness, she may no longer shine as brightly. She can become irritable and may even prefer to avoid people.

It’s important to always keep an open mind when searching for the simillimum. The correct remedy doesn’t always match the stereotypical ideal.

Phosphorus Fears

Okay, now let’s finish with the phosphorus fears.

Fear of Being Alone

Knowing how much phosphorus thrives in company, it’s not surprising that she would have a fear of being alone.

Fear of Being Alone in the Dark

Phos can also be afraid of being alone in the dark. But in the case of phosphorus, fear of being alone seems to be a more characteristic feature than fear of the dark.

Fears Something Bad May Happen to Loved Ones

Given phosphorus’s sympathetic nature, it makes sense that she may fear that something bad will happen to her loved ones.

Fear of Ghosts

Her ability to pick up on psychic energies explains why she tends to fear ghosts.

Fear of Thunderstorms & Lightning

And her sensitivity to the energies in her environment explains her famous fear of thunderstorms and lightning.

Fear of Death

And lastly, Phosphorus can have a fear of death.

Fear of Heart Disease

In addition to a fear of various diseases, especially heart disease.

General Symptoms of Phosphorus

All right, let’s talk now about generals and modalities.

Phosphorus is Tall & Thin

Similar to other remedies of the tubercular miasm, such as Silicea, Calcarea Phos, and Tuberculinum, the constitutional phosphorus type is usually tall and thin.

Big Eyes & Long Eyelashes

Phos may also have large eyes and long eyelashes.

Phosphorus is Chilly

Most cases tend to be chilly, but some can be warm.

Hot Flashes

And there can be temperature instability with flushes of heat or hot flashes.

Thirst is Increased

In terms of food and drink, phosphorus is famously thirsty. Many carry their drinks around with them all day long.

Thirst for Icy Cold Drinks

There’s usually a very strong thirst for cold drinks. Many prefer ice-cold drinks with ice. In acute ailments, a strong increase in thirst for cold drinks often points to the need for phosphorus.

Desires Cold, Icy Milk

Phos also likes cold milk, sometimes ice-cold milk.

Desires Wine

And she may also like to drink wine.

Desires Ice Cream & Milkshakes

Phos will often say that her favorite food is ice cream. She also loves milkshakes.

Desires Salty and/or Spicy Foods

As you can see, there’s a strong preference for both cold drinks and cold food. In terms of tastes, phosphorus usually likes salty and or spicy foods, but there can also be a desire for sweets.

Likes Chocolate & Fish

Additional food preferences include chocolate. And many like fish.

Modalities of Phosphorus

Worse Alone, Better in Company

In terms of modalities, it should come as no surprise that phosphorus tends to be worse when alone and better when in the company of others.

Better From Consolation

Phosphorus is better from sympathy and consolation.

Worse Lying on the Left Side & Vice Versa

There’s a distinct tendency for symptoms to be aggravated by lying on the left side and ameliorated while lying on the right. This applies, for example, to coughs and heart palpitations. Phosphorus also tends to sleep on the right side.

Sleepwalking

Another phosphorus sleep symptom is somnambulism or sleepwalking.

Better From Cold Drinks

Phos symptoms are often better from cold drinks.

Better By Eating and Worse from Fasting

And they may be worse from fasting and better after eating.

Better After Sleep

Phos is usually better after sleep; even a short nap can ameliorate.

Sensitive to Atmospheric Influences

As previously noted, phosphorus is very sensitive to all kinds of atmospheric influences. This can apply to both emotional and physical atmospheres.

Aggravated by Weather Changes

Phos, therefore, can be aggravated by changes in the weather or changes in barometric pressure.

Worse From Cold

She can be worse from cold, windy, stormy weather.

Aggravated By Thunderstorms & Lightning

And she is notoriously affected by thunderstorms and lightning.

Phosphorus Desires To Be Magnetized

Now there’s an additional modality that’s a bit of a mystery. Many of the homeopathic books note that phosphorus “desires to be magnetized“. But there’s a good bit of confusion about what this really means.

Some say that it means that the affected part feels better from being rubbed or massaged. Others say that it means Phosphorus is better exposed to magnets. Given the fact that Phosphorus can be aggravated by lightning, electricity, and other forms of electromagnetic radiation, I’m not so sure that this explanation makes sense. Still others contend that it means Phosphorus feels better when in the presence of a person with a magnetic personality. As if to say that she likes to be captivated or mesmerized by a charismatic person.

I don’t know for sure, but I cast my vote for this last explanation. After all, Phosphorus loves and feels better in the company of others.

Phosphorus is Equally Beneficial, Both For Men & Women

Please note that I’ve been referring to phosphorus as she. But that is really just for convenience. In reality, phosphorus is a remedy that fits both men and women equally.

Physical Health Problems of Phosphorus

Okay, now let’s talk about phosphorus’s physical health problems. Since phosphorus is a broad polycrest that covers a wide variety of ailments, I’m just going to focus on a few of the more common phosphorus physical health conditions.

Burning Pains & Sensations

With that said, phosphorus often complains of burning pains and or burning sensations. The burning can be almost anywhere. There may be internal burning or external burning. You may recall that both sulfur and arsenicum have a similar propensity to develop burning pains.

Respiratory Ailments Needing Phosphorus

Phosphorus also has a predisposition toward a wide range of respiratory ailments. Phosphorus is commonly indicated in cases of:

Chest Infections

There’s a very strong tendency for every cold, sniffle, or fever to subsequently drop down into the chest.

Pneumonia

The phosphorus pneumonia often affects the left lung, but it can also involve the right side.

Cough of Phosphorus

Whether it’s a case of bronchitis, pneumonia, or any other condition that involves coughing. The cough is usually worse first thing in the morning and worse again in the evening. And as noted earlier, the cough is usually worse while lying on the left side and better when lying on the right.

Acute Ailments With Strong Thirst for Cold Drinks

And as is the case with most phosphorus acute ailments, we expect to see a strong thirst for cold drinks.

Phosphorus Specific Vomiting Keynote

An additional phosphorus keynote often mentioned in the literature is that there’s a tendency to vomit as soon as water becomes warm in the stomach.

Hemoptysis

Another clue that should alert us to the possibility of phosphorus is hemoptysis [2]. This is especially true when the blood coughed up is bright red blood.

Strong Hemorrhagic Tendency of Phosphorus

This brings us to another common phosphorus health problem. Phosphorus has a strong hemorrhagic tendency. In other words, Phos tends to bleed easily. And the source of the bleeding can be just about anywhere.

There may be bleeding:

  • From a wound
  • Under the skin
  • From the gums
  • In the eye
  • From the nose
  • From the stomach
  • From hemorrhoids
  • From the respiratory tract
  • From the urinary tract
  • From the uterus, the rectum, or from anywhere.

In all cases, the bleeding tends to be heavy and profuse. And the blood is usually bright red and without clots.

Phosphorus is a Remedy For Bone Disorders

Now, phosphorus is also a remedy for a variety of bone disorders. Recall that most of the body’s phosphorus is found in the bones. Phosphorus children often grow tall and grow rapidly.

Growing Bones Pains

Phosphorus, Phosphoric Acid, and Calcare Phos are among the most frequently indicated remedies for growing pains [3] in children and adolescents.

Bone Injuries & Infections

Phosphorus is also indicated for bone pains and bone injuries. And it’s a remedy for osteomyelitis, which is an infection of the bone.

Phosphorus For Nervous System Disorders

And finally, phosphorus also has a strong relationship to the nervous system.

  • It’s a remedy for a variety of neurologic disorders.
  • It can be indicated in cases of multiple sclerosis.
  • And it’s a remedy for numbness of the extremities.
  • Some complain of numbness of the fingers upon waking from sleep.

Ailments From Anesthesia & Electromagnetic Fields

  • Phosphorus is one of the main remedies for ailments that arise after medical anesthesia.
  • And it’s a remedy for the consequences of electrocution.

Here again, we see that phosphorus can be sensitive and vulnerable to all kinds of energies, including lightning, electricity, and the electromagnetic fields generated by various technologies.

Remedies Relationship of Phosphorus

Okay, let’s turn now to remedy relationships.

Complimentary Remedies

As for complementary remedies, there appears to be little consensus on the topic in the homeopathic literature. It depends on the resource you consult. Some typical complementary remedies listed include:

Carcinosin

Remedies to compare to phosphorus include carcinosin, which is easy to mistake for phosphorus, especially temperamentally. Carcinosin is similarly sympathetic and tends to lack adequate boundaries.

Argentum Nitricum

Argentum nitricum can be easily mistaken for phosphorus because it, too, is friendly and open. The difference, though, is that argentum nitricum has no mental filter whatsoever. They have a quirky manner and tend to blurt out whatever comes to mind impulsively.

Silicea

Silica is similarly tall and thin and prone to respiratory conditions.

Tuberculinum

Tuberculinum is tall and thin, prone to respiratory problems, and desires cold milk.

Calcarea Phos

And lastly, calc phos tends to be tall and thin and is prone to growing pains.

Glossary

Clairvoyance

Clairvoyance is the supposed ability to perceive information about people, places, objects, or future events using extrasensory perception rather than the physical senses. Often described as “clear seeing” or a “sixth sense,” it involves receiving intuitive images or insights beyond normal reality.

Pharyngitis

Pharyngitis is inflammation of the pharynx (back of the throat), commonly called a sore throat, causing pain, redness, and difficulty swallowing. It is usually caused by viral infections (like colds or flu) or bacteria (such as strep throat).

Strep Throat

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus, marked by a sudden, severe sore throat, painful swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils or lymph nodes.

Laryngitis

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx (voice box), causing hoarseness or voice loss, usually lasting 3–7 days in acute cases. It’s commonly due to viral infections, voice overuse, or irritants, with symptoms like sore throat, dry cough, and a weak voice.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the lung air sacs (alveoli), filling them with fluid or pus, leading to cough, fever, chills, and breathing difficulty. It can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.

Phosphorescent Substances

A phosphorescent substance absorbs energy (often UV light) and slowly emits it as visible light, producing a long-lasting glow-in-the-dark effect. Unlike fluorescence, its glow continues for minutes or hours even after the light source is removed.
