Aurum is mainly known as a remedy for depression. I believe that it’s reasonable to conclude that a quarter or more of all antidepressant prescriptions could be rendered completely unnecessary if the medical profession were to simply adopt the use of Aurum in certain cases of clinical depression.

Aurum is a deep-acting remedy that has the power to change people’s lives, and I’ve witnessed this many times in my own medical practice. Of course, Aurum can be of great benefit for many other types of problems, too, but let’s begin with the psychological profile of someone who needs Aurum.

Personality Traits of Aurum Metallicum

The person who needs Aurum tends to be:

Serious-minded, with high expectations of himself or herself.
Hardworking and ambitious with a strong sense of responsibility.
Goal-oriented, career-oriented, and industrious.
Easily tend toward workaholism.
Values honesty and integrity and sees himself as trustworthy and honorable.
His perfectionism and sense of commitment to his goals make it highly likely that he will be successful at whatever he wishes to achieve.

Why does Aurum Metallicum Person become sick?

On the other hand, when he’s focused on his goals, he can be intense and intimidating. He may become angry when contradicted. And therein lies the problem—many of these Aurum characteristics can act as double-edged swords.

As a general rule, things don’t always go the way we want them to, and life has a distinct tendency to throw us curveballs. When things don’t go Aurum’s way, when he experiences a setback in life, he can take it very hard when he fails to live up to his high ideals. When he doesn’t get that promotion at work, when his romantic relationship doesn’t work out, he may begin to question himself. Even a small setback can be interpreted as a serious personal failure.

Aurum Metallicum may respond to his perceived failure by becoming irritable and angry. If faced with too much adversity, he may be plunged into a state of grief, disappointment, and self-doubt. All that energy that was once focused on high achievement and success is then turned inward against himself.

Reproaches Himself (Critical of Himself)

Aurum Metallicum can be very hard on himself. He gets down on himself; he is critical of himself. In the homeopathic literature, it is said that he reproaches himself. As a consequence, he may become isolated and melancholic, brooding over his perceived failures.

A person who previously had all the confidence in the world may be suddenly plagued by low self-esteem. This is when he begins to experience depression. He becomes pessimistic and feels that he is worthless.

Note that a delusion is a false belief.

Depression of Aurum Met is Serious

Aurum Metallicum may see himself as a failure even when others do not. The Aurum depression is not a garden-variety type of depression; it is usually a serious depression that should not be taken lightly.

Words that describe an Aurum type of depression are:

Dark,
Hopeless,
Bleak (Miserable, Charmless),
Joyless

Aurum Met Depression May Lead to Suicide

As the depression worsens, in his despair, Aurum begins to contemplate suicide. He feels that his life has become purposeless, without meaning. Aurum is the main remedy for serious suicidal depression. Remember that Aurum is classified as a syphilitic remedy, which means that its symptomatology tends to be destructive, either on the physical or mental levels, or both.

In extreme cases of depression, an Aurum Met patient no longer wants to live, and he sees no more benefit in living further. He really starts considering committing suicide, and thoughts of suicide give him a sense of relaxation of comfort. He believes that the end of his life means an end to his problems and sufferings. We must think of Aurum Metallicum whenever we see a patient who makes a serious effort to commit suicide.

Aurum may attempt suicide without warning, leaving no note to explain his actions.
The most common methods of suicide associated with Aurum include:

Shooting himself and
Jumping from a height.

I’ve also had several Aurum patients tell me that they felt the impulse while driving to steer the car off the road into a tree.

Ancient Japanese Suicidal Ritual (Harakiri) and Aurum Metallicum

The ancient Japanese ritual form of suicide called harakiri serves as an extreme example here. Historically speaking, rather than die at the hand of an enemy, a Japanese Samurai warrior would sometimes choose to die at his own hand by stabbing himself with his own sword. It was an act that required tremendous courage, one that was meant to preserve a sense of honor and dignity even in defeat. I cannot think of a remedy more befitting of a scenario like that than Aurum Metallicum.

Caution While Treating Aurum Metallicum’s Depression Patients

Since Aurum Metallicum patients can follow their suicidal impulses and can actually try to commit suicide, such cases must be treated with great caution. It is important to tell the patient clearly that he must contact his doctor or get professional support if his suicidal thoughts become severe. In extreme cases, such a patient should be admitted to the hospital for their safety.

Special Caution Regarding Aggravation of Aurum Met in Suicidal Depression Cases

Please note that if a high potency of Aurum Metallicum is given to a patient with Suicidal depression, there may be an aggravation in mental symptoms before relief. The first 1-2 days may be worse, and the patient may try to harm himself. So, it is very important that such a patient is with his friends or family all the time to avoid any bad situation.

Not All Aurum Depression Cases Have Suicidal Tendency

With all that said, there doesn’t need to be suicidal thinking to prescribe Aurum Met. Many cases can present as depression only without any hint of suicidal ideation. Some cases may not appear to be depressed at all.

Other Common Causes of Aurum Depression

Nevertheless, when triggered by a:

Business setback,
Wounded sense of honor,
Feeling of failure,
Death of a loved one,

Most Aurum depressions tend to be serious in nature.

Aurum Met Depression and Religion

An additional clue is that Aurum types can be quite religious or spiritually inclined. He may desire to pray or to meditate. He may pray and weep, begging God for relief from his suffering. As his depression becomes exacerbated, he may sink into religious despair. He begins to question his faith, and finally, he may lose his faith completely, believing that life is meaningless, concluding that there is no God at all.

In addition to prayer and meditation, music is the one other thing that can temporarily ameliorate the existential pain of Aurum. He prefers serious music like classical music, but I’ve also seen cases that are attracted to more dark or angry types of music. When we see a person with depression who is serious about his spirituality and who relies on music to soothe his mind, we must think of Aurum as a possible remedy.

Fears of Aurum Metallicum

Last but not least on the mental level, we have the Aurum fears. There can be a:

Fear of failure
Fear of heights
Fear of heart disease

All three make perfect sense given Aurum’s strong reaction to perceived failures, his morbid impulse to jump to his death, and, as we shall see, his predisposition toward cardiovascular disease.

Physical Symptoms of Aurum Metallicum

Now let’s talk about Aurum on the physical level. Aurum pathology has an affinity primarily for the:

Circulatory system,
Bones,
Nervous system.

Cardiovascular Problems of Aurum Metallicum Patient:

Aurum can be prone to a wide range of cardiovascular problems, including:

Angina
Arrhythmia (heart rhythm that isn’t normal)
Heart attack
Hypertension
Palpitations
Arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
Pericarditis (inflammation of the pericardium, the fibrous sac surrounding the heart)
Heart valve disease

Arthritic and Bone Problems of Aurum Met

Aurum physical pathology also includes a wide array of bone and arthritic problems.

Arthritis

This includes various types of arthritis. Wandering pains that move from joint to joint can be an indicator of Aurum.

Bony Growths (Exostoses)

There may also be bony growths, which in the homeopathic books are called exostoses.

Bones Decay (Osteomyelitis)

Remember that Aurum is a syphilitic remedy, which means that we may also see decay and destruction of bone, as in bone infections or osteomyelitis (infectious inflammation of bone marrow).

Mastoiditis

Aurum is one of the main remedies for mastoiditis, which is an infection of the mastoid bone behind the ear near the base of the skull.

Bone Pains Aggravated At Night

Another characteristic of the syphilitic miasm is a tendency for symptoms to get worse at night. Bone pain that gets worse at night can be a strong indication of Aurum.

Modalities of Aurum Metallicum

Now let’s talk about the modalities of Aurum. Remember, a modality is any factor that aggravates or ameliorates a symptom or problem.

Aggravation At Night (Syphilitic Remedy)

The main modality of Aurum is aggravation of symptoms at night. This is a characteristic of the syphilitic remedies in general. Sometimes that translates into an aggravation from sunset to sunrise.

Amelioration in the Evening

Surprisingly, sometimes we see an amelioration of symptoms in the evening.

Aggravation For Cold Air

There can be an aggravation from cold air.

Amelioration in the Open Air

Aurm Met symptoms ameliorate in the open air.

Prayer, Meditation, and Music Ameliorate

And I’ve already mentioned how prayer, meditation, and music can ameliorate the mental state of Aurum.

Remedies Relationship With Aurum Metallicum

And finally, let’s compare Aurum to some other commonly indicated remedies.

Remedies Known For Idealism, Ambition, and Integrity

Like Aurum Met, Nux Vomica, Ignatia, and Kali Carbonicum are known for their ambition, idealism, and integrity.

Argenticum Metallicum

Like Aurum, argentum metallicum fits right testicular pain.

Natrum Sulphuricum (Suicidal Thoughts)

Aurum and Natrum Sulfuricum are the two main remedies for suicidal thoughts.

Remedies For Wounded Honor

Like Aurum, Ignatia, Nux Vomica, and Staphysagria can suffer from a feeling of wounded honor.

Remedies Known For Strong Responsibility Sense

Naturam muriaticum, Calcarea Carb, Kali Carbonicum, and Ignatia have a strong sense of responsibility, just like Aurum Met.

Remedies of Bony Growths

And additional syphilitic remedies that are also prone to bony growths and bone pains are Kali Iodum, Mezerium, Merc Sol, and Nitric Acid.
